Our Volunteer Program

Volunteers are critical to the success of St. Luke’s mission. We offer a variety of opportunities for individuals, families, and groups. Please contact our Volunteer Manager or 615-324-8375 to verify volunteer openings or for more information about any position. 


Family/Individuals

Food Bank
As a Second Harvest satellite, we operate a busy food bank and need help packing food and unloading boxes.(Must be able to lift at least 20 lbs.) Weekdays from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm.

Adopt-A-Family & Toy Store
St. Luke’s needs help in a variety of areas during our two Holiday programs. Various dates and times in November and December.

English/Literacy Tutoring
In partnership with Nashville Adult Literacy Council, St. Luke’s offers English tutoring to immigrants and literacy tutoring to US-born adults. Tutors are always needed. You and your learner set the hours.

Job Coach

This is a one-on-one mentoring opportunity for professionals to support participants in St. Luke’s Workforce Development Program in their job search and early employment. You and your protégé set the hours.


Children

Big Brothers Big Sisters
Mentor a child in West Nashville through a professionally supported one-to-one relationship. Requires one year commitment of 3 to 4 hours a week working with youth ages 6-18.

Evening Childcare
St. Luke’s provides evening classes and needs volunteers to help with childcare so parents can attend. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

After School Program
Volunteers are needed to lead games, play basketball, read, do arts and crafts, and hang out with kids in our after school program. Weekdays between 3:30 and 5:30 pm. Arts and crafts teachers are needed Friday afternoons from 3:45-5:15 during the school year, and afternoons from 2:00-3:15 in the summer.

Preschool
Volunteers can help in St. Luke’s preschool in a variety of ways. Read, play games, complete arts and crafts. Support the teachers by washing dishes, sanitizing toys, or creating bulletin boards. Adopt a classroom and provide a monthly birthday celebration. Plan a holiday party for a class or the whole school. Help in our preschool library by checking out books to parents.

Reading Buddies
Sign up to be a Reading Buddy and come once a week to read or play reading games. This is a structured and organized program with books and games provided - you just bring your wonderful reading self. Reading Buddies will take place in the summer every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings.

Seniors / Disabled Individuals

Bingo Parties
Seniors from West Nashville come to St. Luke’s for lunch and bingo the last Thursday of each month. We always need volunteers to help serve lunch and help the players.

Senior Buddy Program
Let us match you with a senior in our community. You’ll make an enormous difference by visiting, calling, and maybe doing occasional errands for your friend! This opportunity allows you to set your own schedule.

Mobile Meals
Deliver meals and provide companionship to homebound elderly and disabled adults. Weekdays from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm.

Senior Social Activities
St. Luke’s is open to our senior neighbors every Thursday. We need volunteers to serve lunch and socialize with our seniors. Share your craftiness with our seniors. Lead the group in simple, done-in-an-hour crafts on designated Thursdays.

Home repair - West Nashville Community Development Partnership
Help with home repairs for elderly and disadvantaged residents living in St. Luke's neighborhood. The group meets on the second Saturday of each month from April through October.

Events

Community Events
St. Luke’s hosts three community events each year in the Spring, at Halloween, and at Thanksgiving. Volunteers help plan and assist in activities, food preparation and service, and set-up/clean-up.

Special Events
St. Luke’s raises much-needed funds by hosting an annual dinner. If you love event planning, this is perfect for you!

Administration/Maintenance

Thrift Shop
Support St. Luke’s programs by working at This ‘N’ That Thrift Store. Sort donations, stock shelves, and make sales.

Grass Cutting
Help us maintain our grounds, so we can have a pleasing environment for our hard-working staff and clients.We can provide a push lawn mower and weed-eater, and you would provide your time and talent.

Front Office Support
Assist our front Office Manager in answering the phones, greeting people, helping with food boxes and more.

Kitchen Assistance
Assist our Chef in preparing food for Mobile Meals and the Preschool in cleaning up afterward.
